How do you train your horse to tuck his head under?
I know, everyone says to let him accept the bit and so on, but he has never been trained to. So trying to pull on his head only makes him stop.
My friend said that she had a bit that taught her horse to barrel race with his head tucked very nicely, and that it should work with my TWH, Diesel. I'm showing him next year and I need to know how to get him to tuck his head under. Like, in dressage they do it, saddle seat and so on.
Help would be loverly. <3
edit- do not ride a TWh with draw reins. A gaited horse has natural head nod and a draw rein is resitance to a good head nod.
well first of a TWH does nto trot. The do a Flat Footed Walk, a Runnign Walk, and a canter.
when your horse is performing a running walk you should be able to say "a piece of meat and two potatos" and it would match the beat of your horse.
Below in order
1) a TWH's Gaits
2) How to Tuck a horses head(from my gaited horse training newsletter)
3) why pacing is bad
1)The Flat Walk is a brisk, long-reaching walk that can cover from four to eight miles an hour. This is a four cornered gait with each of the horse's feet hitting the ground separately at regular intervals. The horse will glide over the track left by the front foot with his hind foot: right rear over right front, left rear over left front. The action of the back foot slipping over the front track is known as overstride. Overstride is unique to the walking horse breed. The hock should show only forward motion; vertical hock action is highly undesirable. A Tennessee Walking Horse will nod its head in rhythm with the cadence of its feet. This nodding head motion, along with overstride, are two features that are unique to the Tennessee Walking Horse. This distinctive head motion along with overstride are both things the judge should take into consideration when judging a Tennessee Walking Horse.
The Running Walk is the gait for which the walking horse is most noted. This extra-smooth, gliding gait is basically the same as the flat walk with a noticeable difference in the rate of speed between the two gaits. Proper form should never be sacrificed for excessive speed in a good running walk. The breed can travel 10 to 20 miles per hour at this gait. As the speed is increased, the horse over-steps the front track with the back by a distance of six to eighteen inches. The more "stride" the horse has, the better "walker" it is considered to be. It is this motion that gives the rider a feeling of gliding through the air as if propelled by some powerful but smooth-running machine. The running walk is a smooth, easy gait for both horse and rider. A true Tennessee Walking Horse will continue to nod while performing the running walk.
The third gait is The Canter. The canter is performed in much the same way as other breeds, but the walking horse seems to have a more relaxed way of performing this gait. The canter is a forward movement performed in a diagonal manner to the right or to the left. On the right lead, the horse should start the gait in this order: left hind, right hind and left fore together, then right fore. The footfall for the left lead is right hind, left hind and right fore, then left fore. When performed in a ring, the animal should lead his canter with the foreleg to the inside of the ring. In the canter, the horse gives one the abundance of ease with lots of spring and rhythm, with proper rise and fall to afford a thrill from sitting in the saddle. Thus, the canter lifts the front end giving an easy rise and fall motion much like a rocking chair. This is often referred to as the "rocking-chair" gait.
2)
When you tuck the gaited horses head in it rounds out there back and makes it harder to pace because they tend to gait in a hollow back. In order to get the horse to tuck its head it is very similar to a half- halt. To start you take the reins and have full pressure with one rein (it doesn’t matter which) with the other rein you half- halt, which is give and take pressure to the rein. You may need to drop your hands to your hips. You may also put them lower if necessary. I have also found that if open your arm length to about where your knees are on the horse (while you are collecting your horse) they seem to tuck in more easily.
Once your horse has tucked in you can begin to raise your hands to a higher level on the saddle. You may notice that your horse will become un-collected and you will have to restart until they can keep there head tucked will the angle is tighter. I would suggest starting to collect your horse at the walk then progress onto the running walk, foxtrot, rack… etc. You may also try at the canter but I must warn you that if you have a horse with lots of energy they may try to buck since it easier to buck when the head is tucked in. Good luck and happy gaiting!
3)
Why to Retrain the Pacey Horse
It seems that the majority of gaited horses you will meet do not do their natural gaits. Most will pace or do a stepping gait. In this article I will why it is important to retrain your horse to do there natural gaits.
A horse that paces is moving one set of lateral, or same side, legs in perfect unison, creating an even 2-beat gait, with a moment of suspension between one set of feet picking up and the opposite set striking the ground. The motion of the pace is from side to side, and because of the suspension, there’s also some up and down movement. Neither of these gaits are a smooth ride. If your horse is doing something incredibly bumpy when you are riding and you not knowing anyt
