Can you dye a chiffon and satin dress?
Hi
I was given a cocktail dress from my friend who got it custom made over the internet. Its supposed to be hunter green but its more of a turquoise colour. Im going to a ball and my boyfriend suggested that we go in black and white, kinda like the 'old school' gangsters. I was wondering if i would be able to dye this dress black using either a spray or liquid dye? The dress is made of high quality Chiffon and Satin lining.

It depends on what fiber the dress is made of. It is easy to dye silk chiffon and silk satin, using acid dyes, but if your chiffon and satin are made of polyester, they will not take the dye at all.
The dress is the link is almost certainly polyester. Silk chiffon is nicer and more expensive, so if it were made of silk, they would probably say so.
Polyester can be dyed only with special polyester dyes, which are called disperse dyes; one brand is "iDye Poly". Rit dye will not work at all on polyester; instead, it will just wash out. You cannot buy disperse dye in your local shops, but you can buy it by mail-order. In Australia, order it from Batik Oetoro; in the US, from Blick Art Materials or PRO Chemical & Dye; and in the UK, order from Fibrecrafts.
Disperse dyes are used by boiling the fabric in the dye for an hour or more, or using a pressure cooker. For clothing, this requires a large and expensive cooking pot which should never be used for food again afterwards.
